After covering the Caribbean for more than 20 years, MACO Caribbean Living magazine’s publisher Neysha Soodeen has seen it all and is super impressed by the quality of build and soulful service at Barbados’ only luxury marina development.
The islands of the Caribbean are filled with a myriad of developments with only a few ticking the luxury box. What’s even rarer, are luxury marina developments and on the island of Barbados, there is only one! And a spectacular one at that.
Located on the stunning ‘platinum coast’ of Barbados, on the sparkly shores of the Caribbean Sea are the sister properties of Port Ferdinand Yacht & Beach Club Residences and Saint Peter’s Bay Luxury Resort & Residences. Each with their own vibe, design and offering.
So, what makes these properties different? In a nutshell, it’s perfection. For the sophisticated visitor, there’s a stunningly appointed ‘hotel suite’ and for the home owner, the pleasure of five-star hotel service with all the amenities one could ask for. Guests have the opportunity to enjoy both properties and can be transported from one location to the other via car or water taxi. Amenities are shared and guests can dine in both properties or have an in-house chef visit their suites to prepare meals.
Port Ferdinand Yacht and Beach Club is the new chic destination in Six Men’s Bay – away from the hustle and bustle of it all. The property offers from two to five-bedroom homes and has a South Beach, colonial kind of vibe, evident in the décor which is edgier and more contemporary than most properties on island but still keeping true to the island’s colonial heritage. These marbled residences range in size from 2,500 sq. ft. to 6,300 sq. ft. and come fully packaged with top-of-the-line appliances and furnishings catering specifically to discerning visitors. Each unit comes with its own deeded 60 foot plus yacht berth and with some can accommodate vessels up to 100 ft. For landlubbers, these berths could be leased out as Port Ferdinand is a one of a kind, fully protected marina; and with Barbados being just out of the hurricane belt, this marina is the best spot for yachties to harbour their vessels during this tumultuous season.
There are two 6,300 sq.ft. five-bedroom penthouses with brilliant patio outdoor space, each with 360 degrees of panoramic vistas and seamlessly designed to bring the ‘outdoors in’. They include both indoor and outdoor dining and living areas as well as a plunge pool, and, for those steamy hot Caribbean days, closing those massive invisible glass doors to cool the unit still gives guests the feeling of being outside.
On my arrival, the property had just re-opened its fine-dining restaurant, Dockside at 13° 59° (the latitude and longitude of Barbados) and I had the opportunity to meet some of the staff, who were clearly committed to making every patron feel special. Guests were already seated enjoying their meals in both the air-conditioned cosy indoor dining area as well as the outdoor marina-deck. This new stylish bistro run by renowned Chef Larry Rogers and his wife Michelle, cater to the most discerning palate with an emphasis on unique dishes with a subtle Caribbean influence. Larry, possibly the most famous chef on island has been the proprietor of a number of the island’s hottest restaurants, wooing guests with a classic gastronomic experience and impeccable service.
Although Port Ferdinand caters to those who seek a more ‘intimate’ experience, right across the road is the world-famous Nikki Beach attracting the who’s who on island and elite visitors looking to party the day away. Nikki Beach at Port Ferdinand is the only Nikki Beach in the English-speaking Caribbean and a drawing card of its own for those who follow this sexy global brand.
The Sandbox Spa, is now my favourite spot on island, with cooled rooms and open vistas to the natural rock and lush tropical foliage behind. For guests who wish an ‘outdoor’ experience, massages could be enjoyed in this natural outdoor setting… a wild experience.
Both properties (including St. Peter’s Bay) pride themselves on being able to cater to different generations and ages. The staff are encouraged to do what Bajans do best, which is to exude their natural warmth and share what they love so much about the island. There is nothing stuffy about this luxury development. The beach also enjoys the natural advantage of being a nesting ground for sea turtles. As was perfectly articulated by General Manager, Joseph Violi, “Our properties deliver an activity and amenity-rich Bajan experience – we provide authentic moments that target memories. Whether it’s having a massage outdoors in the beautiful gully at The Sandbox Tree Spa, going on a custom-tailored rum tour or indulging in our endless range of watersports and ocean experiences – you’ll find the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure at our properties. This is why our guests keep coming back.”
All of the residences at Port Ferdinand and St. Peter’s Bay come fully serviced; a total turnkey operation for any investor. Craig Eddins, Managing Director of IMI Worldwide Properties which is overseeing the real estate sales of the resort added, “The construction quality of Port Ferdinand is the best in the Caribbean. Owners have the opportunity to cover costs by putting their residence in the resort-managed rental program with the potential of getting a return on their investment while they are not enjoying it as a vacation home.” Price points for these units are in keeping with other Caribbean luxury offerings with penthouses being offered at US$6.9 million and smaller units starting at US$2.1 million.
